Biographical Information
Fort Worth artist, Susie Kathrine Harrison (1953 - ) showed an ability to draw accurate images from observation and imagination at an early age. Supported by family, she resolved to pursue a career in the field of art.
During high school she earned extra money drawing portraits and caricatures at a local retail store. In 1972 Harrison entered the University of North Texas to earn a degree in commercial art. Gravitating toward drawing and painting courses, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1976.
For several years Harrison worked as a graphic artist for a number of local companies, but discontentment with commercial art business prompted a career turn. Merging an interest in teaching and training others, she returned to school to obtain a teaching certificate allowing her to blend her art and teaching skills. Within two years she earned certification from Texas Wesleyan University. In 1981, Harrison's educational career began in earnest, teaching high school art for twenty five years. Instructing students to explore and enjoy visual skills was fulfilling but creating art was her passion. She retired from public education in 2006 to concentrate more time in her studio.
A significant internal shift occurred when Harrison attended a graduate art class in the summer of 1994. Texas Tech University's extension campus, located in the Texas hill country, became a vital key to new creativity. Uninterrupted studio time and the restful nature setting restored her desire to seriously cultivate personal art making. Annual trips to Tech's campus would continue to refuel her soul and inspired new works for many summers.
She has entered many juried shows at both the state and national levels. Locally, Harrison's work has been presented at Texas Christian University's Art in the Metroplex annual show, numerous Fort Worth Gallery Nights, and Texas Wesleyan University. She has acquired multiple solo shows, provided gallery talks, and on several occasions performed original music relevant to the visual work.
Throughout her artistic career, Susie Harrison has remained fascinated with the human figure. Her art work investigates women's physical, emotional and psychological conditions when coping with change and transformation. Her personal experience and documentation of other women's stories serve as continual inspiration to create art providing a visual voice to women.
